UN General Assembly begins 67th session
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) started onTuesday its 67th session at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Vuk Jeremic, the former Serbian foreign minister who waselected president of the 67th UNGA session on June 8, said inan opening address that the General Assembly is "the onlyforum where all (UN) member states come together assovereign equals to advance the aims of the UN Charter."
Pledging to faithfully serve the cause of the United Nations, Jeremic said: "I look forward toengaging with all delegations, in furtherance of shared goals and objectives."
"Having consulted widely on the matter, I have chosen bringing about adjustment or settlement ofinternational disputes or situations by peaceful means as the overarching theme for our work overthe next 12 months," he added.
According to him, among key issues on its agenda, the General Assembly will address theMillennium Development Goals, climate change and sustainable development, food security, therole of mediation in the peaceful settlement of conflicts, disarmament, and United Nations reform, including reform of the Security Council.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that the GeneralAssembly faces a long and urgent agenda.
Ban noted that the world is in a period of unease and that, at a time of rising unemployment, risinginequality, rising temperatures, and rising intolerance, "the United Nations must rise to themoment."
Renewing his congratulation to Jeremic on taking up the new post, Ban offered his support to theGA president.
"Mr. President, you can count on me, my full support," said the UN chief.
He also hoped that the two of them will be working together during this session to deepen theefforts to strengthen and modernize the United Nations itself.
Following opening week, on Sept. 24, the General Assembly will convene a high-level meeting onthe rule of law at the national and international levels, during which UN member states, non- governmental organizations and civil society will work towards strengthening the rule of law.
The annual general debate, during which the General Assembly hears statements by heads ofstate and government, as well as ministers, will begin on Sept. 2 and conclude on Oct. 1.
Also during its 67th session, which runs through mid-September 2013, the General Assembly willconsider the outcome of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), which took place in Brazil in June 2012.
The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the UnitedNations. Comprising all 193 Members of the United Nations, the General Assembly meets in regularsession intensively from September to December each year and thereafter as required.

耶雷米奇说,这与联大此前的工作紧密联系,同时也基于联合国秘书长的优先事项,希望这项框架性工作能在预防冲突和解决现有冲突方面发挥作用。他说,当今世界面临复杂的国际形势,国际争端与冲突、环境恶化、经济金融危机等诸多挑战需要联合国广大会员国加强合作,寻求共识,有效应对。
耶雷米奇说,和平与安全是推动世界经济增长、实现可持续发展和社会进步的先决条件。维护世界和平与安全是联合国的首要目标,且只有将和平建立在公平和尊重国际法之上,才能使人类有望生活得更加繁荣。
他说:“联合国不可能在一夜之间解决所有问题。尽管它并不完美,但我强烈相信这一组织仍然对解决人类不断增长的需求至关重要。”
耶雷米奇说,在第67届联大工作重点中,实现千年发展目标、改善全球经济治理、努力争取2015年《核不扩散条约》审议大会取得成果、增强联合国维和作用等将是工作的重点领域。
耶雷米奇说,本届联大还将继续坚定不移地致力于打击恐怖主义、确保权利平等和妇女赋权等方面的工作。
联大是联合国主要的政策审议机构。第67届联大期间,将举行一系列会议,其中9月24日举行“国内和国际的法治”高级别会议,9月25日至10月1日举行联大一般性辩论、萨赫勒地区问题部长级会议以及有关刚果(金)、苏丹和南苏丹、打击核恐怖主义的高级别会议和禁止化学武器组织高级别会议。此外,联合国秘书长还将于9月26日启动联合国秘书长的全球教育倡议,并于27日至28日主办关于根除脊髓灰质炎、关于增强营养和打击核恐怖主义高级别会议等一系列会议。
